CV

Ed (b. 1994) is a painter currently based in Cornwall.
My intent as an image maker is to illuminate the threads that collectively bind us together as humans, the kaleidoscopic stars and the future that’s in front of us all. I often think of painting as holding up a torch in a dark cave, where sustained attention is the water that throws up salt.
Painting reveals its truth not through certainty but through possibility — the revelations that occur when feeling becomes form. My work is about listening to what a painting asks for. The warm intimacy that sits at the root of all images is what paces me into painting; it’s an attempt to fingerprint and evidence our shared mortality.
The roar of an idea is fail-able and can slip away as quickly as it’s tilled up from the ground.
I resist the idea that meaning lives at the end — the paradox of half steps, where mineshafts are taller than church steeples and the sea looks over the sky. It’s the impossible questions that awaken me.
The strength of an image can be found in its weakness. Weakness not as uselessness but weakness as simply the admission of being human: a hiccup, a sneeze, daily goings again. My lens is the internal focus required to successfully synthesise the universal potency of feeling, the spirit of time.
Memories are giants cast into stone — a love letter to strength, and to the belief that tomorrow will be better.
